What actually changed for 2026

The structure of a good resume has barely moved in a decade. What has moved is the baseline — and that changes where your effort is worth spending.

Fluent writing stopped being a signal

Anyone can now produce a grammatically immaculate, confidently-worded resume in ninety seconds. That means polish no longer distinguishes you; it is table stakes. What distinguishes you is the class of detail that cannot be generated without having done the work: the specific system, the specific number, the specific constraint. "Drove significant improvements in operational efficiency" is now actively suspicious. "Cut invoice approval from 6 days to 36 hours by moving three sign-off steps into the ERP workflow" cannot be faked.

Skills are being screened as separately as titles

More employers now filter on discrete capabilities rather than only on job titles and years. Practically, that means a well-structured skills block — categorised, specific, mirrored from the posting — is worth more than it used to be, and vague soft-skill lists are worth less than ever.

The application form matters as much as the file

Structured screening questions in the application flow — work authorisation, licence held, minimum qualification, notice period, salary expectation — are where most true automatic rejections happen. A perfect resume attached to a carelessly answered form still goes nowhere. Give the form the same attention as the document.

What has not changed

Single column still parses best. Reverse-chronological is still what recruiters expect. Achievements still beat duties. One page under ten years is still right. Anyone telling you these rules were overturned this year is selling something.

How to use these examples

Each example gives you three things: the section order for that role and stage, a summary line to adapt, and two bullets demonstrating the pattern. All names, employers and figures below are illustrative — replace every number with one you can substantiate.

Find the example closest to your situation, copy its structure, then write your own content into it. If you are between two, use the one matching your career stage rather than your job title; stage drives structure more than field does.

The 12 examples

1. Software engineer, mid-level (4–7 years)

Skills sit high because that is the recruiter's first pattern match. Projects are optional and capped at two.

Summary → Skills → Experience → Projects → Education 1 page Software Engineer ATS · 96
Summary

Backend engineer with 6 years building payment and ledger systems in Java and Kotlin on AWS. Owned services handling 2,000 requests per second at 99.98% availability. Led the decomposition of a monolithic settlement flow into 9 event-driven services.

Experience bullets
  • Cut p95 checkout latency from 840 ms to 210 ms by replacing N+1 queries with a batched data loader and adding Redis read-through caching.
  • Reduced CI runtime from 22 to 6 minutes by parallelising the test suite, unblocking roughly 30 merges per day for a team of 11.

2. New graduate, any field (0–1 years)

Education and projects come before employment history, because that is where your evidence actually lives. Internships count as experience and get the same bullet treatment.

Summary → Skills → Education → Projects → Internships → Activities 1 page Campus Placement · 94
Summary

Computer science graduate (BTech, 2026, 8.4/10) with two internships in web development and a deployed capstone serving 400 active users. Comfortable in Python, JavaScript and PostgreSQL; looking for a backend or full-stack graduate role.

Project and internship bullets
  • Built and deployed a campus event platform (React, Node.js, PostgreSQL) used by 400 students across 3 societies; handled auth, ticketing and email reminders.
  • Internship: automated a manual weekly reporting task in Python, cutting a 4-hour spreadsheet process to a 5-minute scheduled job for a team of 6.

Grade formats vary by country — state yours the way employers in your market expect (GPA, percentage, class or CGPA), and leave it off entirely if it is not competitive and not requested.

3. Registered nurse, experienced

Licensure and certifications sit above experience because they are screening criteria. Every role carries a unit descriptor: bed count, ratio, acuity, EHR.

Summary → Licensure & Certifications → Clinical Experience → Skills & Systems → Education 2 pages ATS Pro · 98
Summary

Critical care RN with 7 years in a 24-bed adult ICU at a Level I trauma centre, CCRN-certified, 1:2 acuity. Charge nurse on night rotation and preceptor to 11 new graduates. Led the unit CLABSI reduction workgroup that held the rate at zero for 14 consecutive months.

Experience bullets
  • Redesigned shift handover around a standardised SBAR sheet across a 22-bed unit, cutting missed-medication incident reports from 7 to 1 per quarter.
  • Delivered a four-session sepsis-recognition refresher to 34 unit nurses; mean time-to-antibiotics fell from 84 to 51 minutes over the following two quarters.

4. Teacher / educator

Certification and subject endorsements go high — they are eligibility criteria in most jurisdictions. Results are attainment, engagement and curriculum, not test scores alone.

Summary → Certification & Endorsements → Teaching Experience → Curriculum & Skills → Education 1–2 pages Education & Teaching · 89
Summary

Secondary mathematics teacher with 9 years across Years 9–13, state-certified with a further-maths endorsement. Head of department for 3 years, leading 6 staff and a 420-student cohort. Rebuilt the Year 11 scheme of work, lifting the pass rate from 71% to 86% over two cycles.

Experience bullets
  • Designed and rolled out a differentiated intervention programme for 38 underperforming students; 29 moved up at least one grade band within the academic year.
  • Mentored 4 early-career teachers through statutory induction, all of whom passed their first-year review and remained in the department.

5. Sales / business development

The one field where numbers are non-negotiable: quota, attainment, deal size, cycle length, retention. A sales resume without figures reads as a sales resume without results.

Summary → Sales Highlights → Experience → Skills & Tools → Education 1–2 pages Corporate Blue · 88
Summary

Enterprise account executive with 8 years in B2B SaaS, carrying a $2.4M annual quota across mid-market manufacturing. Averaged 118% attainment over the last four years, with a $95k mean deal size and a 94-day cycle. Closed the two largest new-logo deals in the region in FY25.

Experience bullets
  • Grew territory revenue from $1.1M to $2.8M in three years by building a partner-referral channel that supplied 40% of qualified pipeline.
  • Cut average sales cycle from 141 to 94 days by introducing a mutual action plan template now used across a team of 9.

6. Product / project manager

The trap here is describing what the team shipped. Every bullet needs your decision, your tradeoff, or your measured outcome — not the roadmap you happened to be near.

Summary → Experience → Skills & Methods → Certifications → Education 1–2 pages Executive Classic · 90
Summary

Product manager with 7 years owning B2B billing and subscription products, most recently a platform generating $18M ARR across 1,400 accounts. Ran discovery with 60+ customers to reframe a failing migration, shipping in 5 months against an 11-month original plan.

Experience bullets
  • Killed two roadmap items after usage analysis showed under 2% adoption, redirecting 3 engineers to a self-serve upgrade flow that lifted plan upgrades 23%.
  • Cut support contacts about invoicing by 41% in one quarter by rewriting the billing page against the top 12 recorded confusion points.

7. Finance / accounting

Qualifications and systems are the screening filters. Scale means transaction volume, portfolio value, entities consolidated and close timelines.

Summary → Qualifications → Experience → Systems & Skills → Education 2 pages Legal & Compliance · 92
Summary

Qualified accountant (ACCA, 2019) with 8 years in group reporting for a multi-entity manufacturing business, consolidating 14 legal entities across 4 currencies. Reduced the monthly close from 11 working days to 5. SAP S/4HANA and Power BI.

Experience bullets
  • Rebuilt the intercompany reconciliation process in SAP, eliminating a recurring $400k in unmatched balances and removing 30 hours of manual work per close.
  • Led the first-time adoption of a new lease standard across 14 entities, delivering an unqualified audit opinion with zero adjustments.

8. Designer (product / UX / visual)

Two documents. A single-column resume for the portal, and your portfolio doing the visual work. Never let the resume try to be the portfolio.

Summary → Portfolio link → Experience → Skills & Tools → Education 1 page Portfolio Showcase · 72 (direct email only)
Summary

Product designer with 6 years on data-heavy B2B tools, currently owning end-to-end design for a scheduling product used by 12,000 field technicians. Built and maintain a 60-component design system adopted by 4 squads. Portfolio: yourname.design

Experience bullets
  • Redesigned the job-dispatch flow after 18 field observation sessions, cutting average task completion from 4m 20s to 1m 50s in usability testing.
  • Introduced a shared component library that removed 3 conflicting button patterns and cut design-to-build handoff queries by roughly half.

If a posting asks for a portfolio, put the plain-text URL in your contact block — yourname.design — not behind linked words. Extraction keeps what is visible.

9. Data analyst

Analysts get judged on whether their analysis changed a decision. Say what the business did differently because of your work.

Summary → Technical Skills → Experience → Projects → Education 1 page ATS Pro · 98
Summary

Data analyst with 4 years in retail and subscription analytics — SQL, Python, dbt and Power BI. Own the churn and cohort reporting for a 900,000-customer base. Analysis of a retention cliff led to a pricing change that cut 90-day churn by 2.4 percentage points.

Experience bullets
  • Replaced 6 hand-maintained spreadsheets with a dbt model and a single certified dashboard, cutting weekly reporting effort from 9 hours to 40 minutes.
  • Segmented 900k customers by purchase recency and category mix; the resulting three-tier campaign lifted repeat purchase rate 14% against a holdout group.

10. Career changer

Hybrid format: a substantial skills block above a full chronological history. You reframe, you do not hide. Dates stay visible.

Summary → Relevant Skills → Relevant Projects → Full Work History → Education & Retraining 1–2 pages Skills Based · 85
Summary

Operations manager moving into data analytics, with a completed analytics certificate and 18 months of applied SQL and Python work inside my current role. Nine years running warehouse operations gives me the domain context most analysts lack: I have owned the processes the data describes.

Bridge bullets
  • Built the SQL and Power BI reporting used by 3 site managers to plan shift cover, replacing a manual process I had previously run for four years.
  • Analysed 2 years of pick-error data to identify 4 recurring causes; the resulting layout change cut errors 31% across a 60-person site.

The strongest career-change evidence is work you did in your old job using your new skills. Find it before you write anything else.

11. Military to civilian transition

Translate everything. Rank, unit designations, occupational codes and acronyms are invisible to civilian recruiters and to keyword searches.

Summary → Skills & Clearance → Experience (translated) → Training & Certifications → Education 2 pages Veteran Transition · 91
Summary

Logistics and maintenance manager with 12 years of military service, most recently accountable for a $14M equipment inventory and a 34-person team across 3 sites. Active security clearance. Six consecutive audits passed with no material findings.

Translated bullets
  • Managed maintenance scheduling for a 120-vehicle fleet, raising operational availability from 78% to 94% over 18 months.
  • Trained and certified 40 personnel on new inventory procedures, cutting stock discrepancies by 62% within two quarters.

Rule of thumb: if a term would not appear in a civilian job posting, replace it. "Platoon Sergeant" becomes "Team Lead (34 staff)". Keep the official title in brackets only where accuracy demands it.

12. Academic / research CV

The one case where the usual rules genuinely do not apply. Length follows output, and publications, funding and teaching are the substance.

Research statement → Education → Appointments → Publications → Funding → Teaching → Service 3+ pages Academic CV · 85
Research summary

Postdoctoral researcher in computational biology; 11 peer-reviewed publications (4 first-author), h-index 9. Principal investigator on a €180,000 early-career grant studying protein-folding prediction. Supervised 6 masters and 2 doctoral students to completion.

Entry patterns
  • Publications: full citation, consistent style throughout, your name emphasised, newest first.
  • Funding: awarding body, scheme, amount, dates, and your role — principal investigator, co-investigator or named researcher.

If you are applying to industry from academia, do not send the CV. Write a two-page resume and translate research output into deliverables, methods and scale. Research CV and Graduate Researcher cover both directions.

Which format to choose

FormatWhat it isUse it whenVerdict
Reverse-chronological Jobs newest first, each with dates and bullets You have a broadly continuous history in or adjacent to your target field Default for almost everyone. Expected by recruiters, safest for parsers
Hybrid / combination A substantial skills and relevant-projects block above a full chronological history Career change, return after a break, or a portfolio of relevant work outside your job title Use deliberately. Keeps dates visible while leading with relevance
Functional Grouped by skill area, employment history minimised or undated Rarely justified Avoid. Reads as concealment, and duration filters cannot compute your experience
Academic CV Comprehensive record of research, publications, funding, teaching and service Academic, research, clinical-academic and some medical roles Correct in context only. Never send one for an industry vacancy

The mistakes we see most

  1. Duties instead of outcomes. "Responsible for managing the client onboarding process" is a job description. Add what changed.
  2. A summary that could belong to anyone. If your summary would work for 500 other applicants, it is doing nothing. Put a number in the first two lines.
  3. Soft-skill lists. "Team player, excellent communicator, detail-oriented" is unverifiable filler. Demonstrate these in bullets instead — mentoring, stakeholder counts, documents written.
  4. Two-column templates for portal uploads. Still the single most common parsing failure. One column.
  5. Skill rating bars. No extractable text, no shared meaning. Nobody knows what four-fifths of Excel is.
  6. Unexplained gaps. A dated one-line entry — "Career break, full-time caregiving, 05/2024 – 02/2025" — costs you far less than a silent hole.
  7. Every job weighted equally. Five bullets on a role from 2013 and two on your current one inverts your own relevance.
  8. Invented numbers. Anything on the page can become an interview question. If you cannot defend a figure, use a count or a range you can.
  9. Unlabelled acronyms. Spell it out once alongside the short form; you do not know which the recruiter searched.
  10. Contact details in the page header. Some parsers skip that region entirely, and then nobody can reach you.

Frequently asked questions

What resume format is best in 2026?

Reverse-chronological, single column, for almost everyone. It is what recruiters expect, what parsers handle most reliably, and what makes career progression readable at a glance.

A hybrid format — a strong skills block above a full chronological history — is the right choice for career changers and people returning after a break. Purely functional resumes that hide dates are read as concealment and should be avoided.

Has AI changed what a good resume looks like?

It has changed what a bad one looks like. Fluent, generic, confidently-worded resumes are now trivially cheap to produce, so polished-but-empty writing no longer signals effort — it signals the opposite.

What still cannot be generated is specificity: the actual system you rebuilt, the actual number it moved, the actual constraint you worked under. Use AI to tighten your phrasing, then make sure every bullet contains a fact only you could know.

How many bullet points should each job have?

Three to five for your current or most recent role, two or three for the one before, and one or two for anything older than about five years.

Weight the space toward what is most relevant to the job you are applying for, not toward what took the longest. A role from twelve years ago in an unrelated field can be a single line with title, employer and dates.

Should I include a photo on my resume in 2026?

Not for applications in the US, UK, Canada, Australia or Ireland — many employers actively strip photos to reduce bias exposure, and some parsers handle image-heavy documents badly. Photos remain conventional in parts of continental Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Follow the norm of the country you are applying in, and when in doubt leave it off: no application has ever been rejected for lacking a photograph.

Do I need a different resume for every job?

You need one master resume and a ten-minute tailoring pass per application. Rewrite the summary to match the role, reorder your skills so the posting's own terms appear first, and adjust two or three bullets to use the employer's vocabulary.

That is enough to move you up a keyword search without maintaining twelve separate documents.

Are resume templates with columns and graphics still acceptable?

For portal uploads, no — multi-column layouts are the most common cause of scrambled parsing, and graphics contain no extractable text.

Keep a single-column version as your application document, and if you want a designed version for a portfolio site or a direct email to a hiring manager, maintain it as a separate file.
